Rijkerdam was originally built as a small layout to help promote the newly formed Netherlands Railways Society. The layout depicts a fictitious, busy ferry terminal close to the Rotterdam Europoort, consisting of a station with three platforms, a goods deport and a small container interchange to enable the display the various models that were available at that time. The overall dimensions were 16ft x 2ft and the track layout allowed up to three operators to keep trains constantly moving, but could easily be operated by one person. Rijkerdam was on the exhibition circuit for many years before being retired and was featured as Railway of the month in the March 1996 Continental Modeller.
